Ramco Cements Ltd, previously known as MCL, is the collaborated Company of the Ramco groups of work. It is the major Company dealing with blended cement in the south. This Company is the 5th largest producer of cement in the country. The main product is the Portland Cement, which is manufactured in the Integrated Cement plants and Grinding units with a gross production capability of 16.5 million MTPA. From 1997, the Company has been a forerunner in the production of cement.
The Company helps in the building of houses all over the country and other constructions which are not quite in commercial businesses. It uses electricity produced from the windmills and the thermal power plants. It is also involved in the trading of this electricity. However, this business flourishes only when there is electricity left after the consumption in its captive requirements.
About Company Information:
The Company came into effect in 1957. The Company took away the four mills from another old company which had the Mills for twenty years and combined them into one. The mill opened in 1985. The project was assigned in 1986, and new units were added to produce power in Jayanthipuram. In 1992, a new windmill was introduced to increase productivity. Asia's largest set up in Private Sector was made.
In 1993, 16 wind Mills were commissioned, and eight wind turbines were added in the sector to produce 6 MW of power. In 1994, MCL had upgraded its capacity in a few sectors. Seventy more Mills were added.
In 1997, MCL created the third plant in Alathiyur. The clinker plant and grinder unit were introduced. By 1998, the Company joined with the Ready Mix Concrete Business and made a tie-up with VSP for the production of slag. On 15 April 1999, they tied up with GAIL for gas and fuel supply. They tied up with ONGC for even more fuel and Vizag Steel Plant for the supply of slag. By 2000, the capacity of the Alathiyur unit came up to 0.2 million TPA.
During January 2001, a new unit was commissioned at Alathiyur with a capacity of 15 lac tonnes. There was the instalment of the segment to a cooler, new cooler, a modern calciner and a modifying preheat cyclone. In 2003, the aid of M.Tec, Germany had given rise to a new unit to produce high tech products like render, skim coat and dry concrete in Sriperumbudur. During 2004-05, a 36 MW plant was commissioned in Alathiyur, which became the first example in India to modernise mine operations.
In 2007, the Company decided to start units in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. In October, the grinding mill of Kolaghat, West Bengal fetched a capital of Rs 1.05 billion. The Company began investing in sugar, power services, textiles and pharmaceuticals. During March 2008, the Company invested 15.24 billion to increase its capacity. The board decided to create an entirely different subsidiary group for the allied products of the Company. The unit was named as Madras Sugars Ltd, which came into effect on 27 October 2007.
In 2009, the Tamil Nadu plant began to operate with a capacity of 2 MTPA. In 2012, the capacity of another 2 MPTA was issued. In2013, the Board of Madras Cement decides to invest the subsidiary company to produce 23.23 MW of power. The total wind capacity of the Company became 159.19 MW. On 29 July 2013, a resolution passed to change the name from MCL to The Ramco Cements Limited.
On 27 January 2016, Ramco Cements was allotted to the Links Logistics Limited to join the business in the logistic field. On 16 June 2016, the Company was declared to be stable by ICRA. On 7 February 2017, the Buyback proposal was approved by the board which wanted fully paid equity shares for a gross amount of Rs.180 crores from all shareholders excluding people acting through open market purchases like promoters. 16 August 2017, share buyback closed.
In March 2018, Ramco Cements a new cement grinding machine was introduced. The plant grinds 0.2 MTPA of cement and is located in Kharagpur, West Bengal.
