The company involved in providing personal care items is essentially a holding of Colgate-Palmolive Company, U.S.A. The company launched its first toothbrush in India back in 1983 under the name Colgate Plus Toothbrush. Within the next five years, in 1988, the company, Colgate-Palmolive (India) Ltd got its license to produce 24,000 tonnes quantity of fatty acids every year. It was around the same time that the company decided to register with DGTD to receive a permit to produce 30,000 tonnes of toilet soap every year.
The company decided to establish and own their subsidiary in Nepal, at Hetanda. This unit was to be made responsible for the manufacturing of tooth powder and toothpaste at an initial level. In the following years in 1991, Colgate-Palmolive India launched its first gel toothpaste named Colgate Gel Toothpaste along with the new Palmolive soap and Palmolive extra care.
In another five years, in 1996, multiple new segments were introduced in the Indian market by the company, some of which included the Colgate fresh stripe toothpaste, Palmolive natural soap for personal hygiene and care, Palmolive optima as well as the Keratin Treatment in the company’s hair care segment.
In the next three years, in 1999, the company went on to launch several new products in the market. It now offered three new products of Colgate Sensation, Colgate Total, and Colgate Double Protection. At the company’s manufacturing unit located in Nepal, they started a research and development segment to enhance the quality and quantity of products.
Back in 2000, Colgate-Palmolive India launched two different varieties of their Palmolive Naturals soap and revamped the sandalwood soap that was already selling in the market previously.
Between the years 2000-2001, the company went on to launch Colgate Zig Zag Toothbrush, Colgate Navigator Toothbrush, Economy Toothpaste, Transparent Skin Care Soap and the Colgate Herbal Toothpaste, in the market. Between 2005-2006; to meet the consumer demand at the time, the company started working closely with its Technology centres located in India as well as U.S.A for their Oral Care Category Innovation segment.
Colgate-Palmolive India’s manufacturing unit located in Sewri, stopped its operations starting from 27th of September in 2006, between 2006 and 2007. In June 2011, a long-term agreement was signed by the company with Essel Propack Ltd which was to set up a new plant that would require an investment of Rs. 400 million in Goa.
On the 14th of January, 2013, the company stated that it was to enter the gum care segment and would start with the launch of a new product by the name of Colgate Total Pro Gum Health toothpaste. On the 22nd of May, 2014, the company announced that they would now commercially produce toothpaste which had already been commenced on 21st of May, the same year at their new manufacturing unit in Gujrat, at Sanand. On the 6th of October in the year 2016, Colgate Palmolive (India) Ltd stated that the company has agreed upon an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) which would allow them to put industrial land as well as the building for transfer/sale at their Aurangabad location, in Waluj.
