August Sky Show: Rare double supermoon and blue moon offer celestial delights; here's what makes it a rare occurrence
This August, skywatchers will witness two Supermoons and a rare Blue Moon, the first of which will peak at 2:32 pm EDT on August 1 and last for almost three days. The monthly Blue Moon is the second full moon in a single calendar month that has already experienced one full moon, while the Seasonal Blue Moon represents the third full moon of an astronomical season comprising four full moons. The occurrence of Blue Moons happens about every two to three years, and in rare cases, certain natural catastrophes can cause particles to enter the atmosphere, leading to genuine blue-tinted moons.
