KOLKATA: Coal India’s fuel despatch fell to 42% of average on Thursday, the first day of a three-day strike by unions against private competition in coal mining.

Production and top soil removal at mines were 38% and 58% of their respective recent averages, it said in a statement.

It loaded 5,78,000 tonnes on Thursday against an average of 1.4 million tonnes per day in the past 10 days, while production fell to 4,81,000 tonnes from 1.3 million tonnes per day, it said.

The company said no untoward incident was reported and attendance is likely to improve as some workers are resuming work.

Coal India Chairman Pramod Agrawal urged workers to resume work which was important in view of the pandemic and the international situation.

Agrawal said that the coal minister and secretary had already given an assurance that there was no question of privatization of the company.

“No coal block of CIL would be given away for commercial coal mining,” he said, adding that there would be no impact on future employment.
