New Delhi: Domestic bourses witnessed mayhem on Monday as bears gave Dalal Street a tight hug. Benchmark indices registered their biggest loss in the last 10 months. The selling trigger was the worsening Ukraine crisis with Russia.

The 30-share pack Sensex plunged 1,747.08 points or 3 per cent to 56,405.84. Its broader peer Nifty50 tanked 531.95 points or 3.06 per cent to 16,842.80. Wider markets tumbled as BSE midcap and smallcap indices shed 4 per cent each.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services said "increased tension between the US and Russia over Ukraine sent oil prices rising and forced investors to dump risky assets. Risk sentiment was further dampened ahead of the Fed’s emergency meeting which heightened fears of aggressive monetary tightening."
