It was a crucial moment in the Super 4 match between India and Pakistan on Sunday. Chasing India's big target of 182, Pakistan were neck and neck in the 18th over. Leggie Ravi Bishnoi was bowling his last one. India had got rid of both big-hitting Mohammad Nawaz and tenacious Mohammad Rizwan by then. One more wicket could have put the brakes on Pakistan at that juncture.

New batsman Asif Ali got down on one knee for a slog sweep against Bishnoi. The ball took the outside edge of the bat and looped high to point where Arshdeep settled under it calmly for the catch. And dropped it!

Skipper Rohit Sharma let out a yelp of anger and despair. "Took it too easy," said Shaz from the commentators box. "It was a dolly," agreed Waz. Young Arshdeep looked as if he wanted to dig a hole and hide himself.

Asif played a crucial role in the two-odd overs that followed, hitting 16 off half a dozen deliveries with one six and two boundaries.

The last of the boundaries was off the bowling of Arshdeep in the final over, in which seven were needed for a win. Arshdeep did get his revenge by trapping Asif in front as he shuffled too far across, and making the contest tighter with just a couple of balls left. But he couldn't stop Pakistan from scampering to a win.

Angry fans went after Arshdeep for the dropped catch, calling him the "villain" of the match and targeting him with brutal memes.

But Arshdeep got good support from some in his fraternity. Senior player Virat Kohli backed him saying," "Even when I played my first game against Pakistan in Champions Trophy, I played a bad shot and got out. Anyone can make mistakes under pressure. It is natural to feel bad. The team environment is great right now, credit for this goes to management and captain. So one must accept his mistake, address it and look forward to being in that pressure situation once again,"

Former India pacer Irfan Pathan urged him to stay strong, and former India spinner Harbhajan Singh went after those who were critical of Arshdeep.

"Stop criticising young @arshdeepsinghh. No one drop the catch purposely..we are proud of our 🇮🇳 boys .. Pakistan played better.. shame on such people who r putting our own guys down by saying cheap things on this platform bout arsh and team.. Arsh is GOLD," he tweeted.
