    Mankind Pharma set to roll out cheapest coronavirus drug

    Mankind Pharma is all set to launch the cheapest molnupiravir, the Covid-19 antiviral drug, this week at ₹35 per capsule, its chairman told ET.

    The full treatment of Molulife (brand name) is expected to cost ₹1,400, RC Juneja, chairman of Mankind Pharma, told ET. The brand is expected to hit this week in the market, he said.

    The recommended dose of the molnupiravir is 800 mg twice a day for five days. A patient needs to take 40 capsules of 200 mg dosage form. The oral pill will be manufactured by 13 Indian pharmaceutical companies including Torrent, Cipla, Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy's, Natco, Mylan and Hetero.

    The drug is approved for restricted use under emergency situation for treatment of adult patients who have a high risk of progression of Covid-19.

    Molnupiravir developed by MSD and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics was approved by the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and USFDA for the treatment of mild-to-moderate Covid-19 at high risk of developing severe disease.

    In the coming days Cipla, Sun Pharma and Dr Reddy's Laboratories will also be launching molnupiravir capsules. The drug is expected to cost between ₹2,000-₹3,000 for full treatment by other companies, people in the know told ET. Most of the firms had entered into a non-exclusive voluntary licensing agreement with Merck Sharpe Dohme (MSD) to manufacture and supply molnupiravir in India and to over 100 low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Cipla plans to launch molnupiravir under the Cipmolnu brand. Cipmolnu 200mg capsules will soon be available at leading pharmacies and Covid treatment centres across the country. Dr Reddy's said it would soon launch its molnupiravir 200mg capsules under the brand name Molflu in the country.
