“We are offering 156 flats in “G Block of Unitech The Residences, Sector 33 Gurugram”. These flats can be used to quarantine and treat COVID-19 patients.

The Haryana Government will be able to treat over 11,000 patients over the next few months in this facility. The towers are 95% complete in all respect, it is equipped with lifts, and plumbing has been completed. The only thing which the block needs is water, sewerage and electricity connection and completion of the bathroom, which can be completed and made operational in a matter of few weeks using the existing material and infrastructure available at the site,” said Suraj Singh, representative of buyers of Unitech Uniworld Resorts.

Singh said the the tower is separated from other society and can be completely cordoned off if needed. The homebuyers have written to Haryana’s Chief Minister.

The project is located at Shankar Chowk in Gurgaon.

“Within a radius of 5 km is the Civil, Fortis and Medanta Hospital. Doctors, nurses and medical staff can come from these hospitals to the site to treat the patients. Stranded migrant labour in Gurugram city can be deployed in the towers to make it ‘Quarantine Ready’ for COVID-19 patients. By doing this will also be able to earn their livelihood with dignity,” Singh added.

Homebuyers have estimated that these flats need about Rs 6 crore to be completed. 156 families have offered R 1.56 crore (Rs 1 lakhs each) to start the work immediately. After six weeks these 156 families will give Rs 50,000 each again to ensure continuity of work.

“For over a year, there has been no work. Though, it will take a few weeks to complete it. Once government takes over, we have the surety that it will be handed over to us,” Singh said.

The residents have also decided that they will not ask for possession till March 31, 2021 and that it can be used by the Government of Haryana till then.

Most had booked these flats from Unitech in 2009, which was supposed to be delivered in 2012.

“We are suggesting at all residential projects which are 80 – 95% complete should be taken over by the government and completed under the Jan Bhagidari model. These units should be used to treat COVID – 19 patients for one to two years,” he further said.

The newly constituted board of Unitech was asked in February first week to chalk out and submit a resolution plan to the top court within two months. But because of the lockdown, it couldn’t do that.

The board will be allowed to monetise the unencumbered assets of the company for completion of housing units.
