Artist Michelle Poonawalla’s sculpture ‘Striped Tiger’ has raised 75,600 HKD (approximately Rs. 7,46,115) for tiger conservation at a recent Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong.

The WWF Tiger Trail auction took place online on 5 May 2022 via Sotheby’s Hong Kong and presented a total of 56 lots, raising HKD 3,072,510 (Rs. 3,00,68,162) for the conservation of the endangered tiger species in South East Asia for WWF. Poonawalla was the only Indian whose artwork raised funds at the auction.

Poonawalla had specially created a painted fibreglass sculpture for the Tiger Trail by WWF-Singapore, that was displayed at The National Gallery of Singapore and MSpace at MayBank, Singapore. The sculpture featured her signature motif of a butterfly, intended to be a symbol of freedom, fragility and the metamorphoses of life.

Talking about the project, Poonawalla says “Having worked with and been associated with non-profit organisations in the past including Elephant Parade, Make Art For Mumbai’s Mangroves and Art for Concern, I was drawn to Tiger Trail and its mission to double tiger numbers in Southeast Asia. It is my privilege and honour to be able to make art that supports the environment and majestic animals such as the tiger, helping to secure their survival for generations below us.”

The sales proceeds will go to support core tiger conservation activities including the effective management of protected areas, disruption of illegal wildlife trade and reduction of demand for tiger parts and products.

Tiger Trail was a six-week (26 February - 9 April 2022) island wide installation of tiger sculptures and artworks in Singapore. The public, open air exhibition also brought together 47 international artists including Subodh Gupta, Bharti Kher, Kumari Nahappan, Nick Gentry and Dave White to celebrate and raise awareness for the tiger.
