Guterres: Risk of nuclear war back after decades
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on Monday, while talking to the media after attending the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony, that the threat of nuclear war is back after decades.
Guterres noted that any attack on a nuclear plant is a "suicidal thing," pointing to the most recent strikes on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. He expressed hopes that these attacks will be halted.
Guterres underlined this is "the moment to ask the nuclear-armed countries to commit to the principle of non-first use" as no one can accept "the idea that a new nuclear war could happen" since this would mean "the destruction of the planet."
